Healthy interest or Obsession with web analytics?

Google Analytics

A few months ago, Iย started learning about my readership.ย  I added Google Analytics to my website.ย  At first I was just curious to find out about my audience.ย  Iย wonderedย about how many people were visiting my website and where they’re located.

Then I discovered you can find out a lot more about theย methods your audience is using to read an article.ย  For instance you can seeย which browser, screenย dimensions,ย Operating System, Internet connection.ย  This is all useful information for your decisions on how toย present your information.

As I started getting more familiar with the statistics and the terminology, I decided to add some conversion data to my Google Analytics.ย  A conversion is getting your audience to visit a desired page, as a result of clicking through the page they’re on.ย  This is a really important statistic to know when you’re trying to sell stuff.ย  In my case, I don’t currently sell anything, but I am trying to develop my own personal brand.ย  So, if the readers are interested enough to go to my personal information, then I consider that a conversion.

At the time of this article, I have people viewing from 10 countries or territories.ย  Most of them are from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.ย  The remaining 7 countries or territories are from around the world.

Within the United States I have a readership in 23 states so far.ย  It’s kind of interesting as I see which states are reading my blog on a regular basis.ย  I can also see where there are concentrations of people who enjoy my blog.ย  One of my goals is to eventually have my blog represented in all 50ย of the United States.ย  I guess I haven’t found a topic that is interesting to everybody yet.ย  I may neverย find it,ย but I’m always hopeful.ย  Forย anyone who has been following this blog for awhile, you know I have a wide range of interests and like to share my views.ย  If I everย find that one special topic I’ll let everyone know.ย  I may even start a new blog just to focus onย that topic.

Analyzing the statistics

I regularly visit my web statistics tools

  • Google FeedBurner
  • Google Analytics
  • Google Webmaster Tools (GWT)
  • Alexa.com – rating based on popularity of a website
  • WordPress statistics

In the morning, I check ย just to see if there is any new information from the day before.ย  It appears to beย information from the previousย day.ย  In the evening, I’ll check once more, because I never know when those bots will be crawling my website.

If I see any technical issuesย have popped up, like broken links or duplicates orย other suggestions related to meta data, I try to address it as soon as possible.

Sometimes, I canย equate watching the web analytics toย watching a single stock in the stock market.ย  You watch it rise and you’re celebrating.ย  You watch it fall and you wonder why.ย  I think this is where it could become an obsession if theย focus is too much on the statistics.ย  I have already decided that I’m only going to check twice a day and not be too concernedย aboutย the peaks and valleys.ย  Because the statistics change daily.

After a few months of waiting, the Google Webmaster tools finally gave me a list of common keywords found while crawling my site.ย  I’m not sure what to do with this information.ย  But I’mย sure someone has blogged about it.ย  I’ll check with www.ProBlogger.Netย to see if they have some insight onย how I should utilize this information.ย

BTW:ย  If anyone has experience with other useful web analysis toolsย please feel free to leave your coments.

What does blogging mean to you? Some people blog about their hobbies, business interests, their family and sometimes in support of causes or against unfair issues that affect them.

Is blogging today the say as writing papers (being published) was not too long ago? Is there a commonality between bloggers? Why do two people that are passionate about a subject share their concerns differently? What are your thoughts about blogging?

  2. Blogging definitely means different things to different people. Bloggers blog for different reasons too. Some for fame and recognition while for others it may be to ultimately make money. Still others are just doing it for the joy of teaching others. Isn’t it great that the world is full of different points of view. It surely makes life interesting. The reasons for doing my blog is a mixture of many of these. I do love to write and share my point of view. I love to teach others as well.
