Don’t get pigeonholed

Whether we like it or not, people tend to categorize things.  Sometimes, they might associate a person with a particular activity or personality type.  Maybe a group of people will be associated with a cause or hobby.

In work, you might have accepted the challenge of a specific task that nobody else wanted.  You did it so well, that you are now the resident expert on the subject.  The next time a task like this comes up, you might be asked to do a repeat.  A few more times and you’ve been pigeonholed.  To avoid this in the future, make sure you diversify yourself in the tasks that you take on.  Take that extra training so you’re ready for a different challenge.

On the net, it seems like you can be pigeonholed without even knowing about it.  Let’s say you’re a member of an organization that provides training and creates networking opportunities for professionals to advance their careers.  There is a group called Professional Resource Network that has been doing this for many years.  They’re a chapter of Experience Unlimited.  This group was categorized with other groups that didn’t quite communicate their mission.  This tells me that our marketing department needs to do some more work at sending the intended message to our target audience.  I guess we have our work cut out for us.

Till next time,  learn some new skills and take on new challenges

Your tools affect your efficiency

The other day, I planned to replace the front disc brake pads on one of our cars.  The procedure is a relatively painless one.  With the right tools, it can be performed in less than an hour.  The key is having the tools on hand when you need them.

I started by chocking the wheels so they wouldn’t roll while I worked on the car, then I jacked up the car & removed the tires.  Everything was going according to plan until I discovered that some of my tools had been borrowed.  When I asked about the missing tools.  The answer was oh, yeah, so and so borrowed them the other day.  Didn’t I tell you about that?

Fortunately, I still had some tools to use.  They weren’t my first choice, but they were functional enough to help me complete the job.

Some lessons learned:

  • The tools on hand affect how quickly you can do the job (some tools work better than others)
  • Never assume the tools will be where you last put them (if others have access to your tools)
  • Make sure you have all the tools you need before you begin your job
  • Alternate tools can still help get the job done

Till next time, I’m getting my tools ready for the next job 😉

Fire drills are killing my productivity

We’ve all experienced it at least once in our lives.  If you haven’t yet, it will happen to you too.  You start making progress on that important project or very important task.  You finally get into the zone;  That place where magic happens, incredible amounts of creativity begins to flow and everything seems to be going as planned.  Then, without warning, BAM, someone has an emergency that must be taken care of right now.

This week it seemed like there were nothing but fires.  They weren’t real fires, but they were pretty successful at derailing my attempts at getting into my zone.  After the fires died down, I was finally able to recover.  I did have to put in some extra work to catch up.

When working with the Boy Scouts, we talk about build fires and fire safety.  You need three basic components to have a successful fire (fuel, air, heat).  When you take away one of these, a fire cannot exist.  To put out a fire, we usually, take away one or more of the components.  Without the three together, the fire will quickly or eventually die out.

The tools we use for putting out a fire are water, sand and shovel.  These work together to remove the heat and air from the fire.  The fuel is still there, but without air and heat the fire will stop.

Fires do happen from time to time.  But we can do our part to minimize their effects on others.

So, how can we deal with the fires in life:

  • learn how they get started
  • learn how to put them out
  • teach others to do the same
  • practice what you preach

Till next time, do some personal fire prevention

To do lists and dreams verses goals

I like to write down my ideas and action items on paper.  Sometimes my family kids me about the lists I keep, but that’s okay because they help me stay focused on what needs to be done.

I seem have lists for many occasions:

  • grocery items
  • daily to do items
  • short term to do items
  • long term to do items
  • wish list

Of course these lists usually grow every day, tasks are forwarded to other lists and some tasks turn into their own more detailed lists.  I’ve even had a foreign exchange student comment, in a good way, about Americans and their lists.  We like to get things done and lists are one tool we use to organize our activities.

Occasionally, I review my lists I have recorded.  It’s pretty amazing to see how many of these tasks have been completed.  One trend I’ve noticed is that when a task is written down, it eventually comes to fruition.  Of course in the past, when I wrote these tasks down, I didn’t put a completion date on them.  So they were things that I would like to be completed sometime in the future.  Napolean Hill would have said they were just dreams.

“A goal is a dream with a deadline.” – Napolean Hill

I’ve got a pretty good start, I know I’ve been getting things done.  However, I think Napolean Hill had it right.  Adding deadlines to the dreams will convert the dreams into goals.  The end result will be getting the more important things done.

Till next time,  add deadlines to your dreams 😉

Strawberries: the viral fruit

My grandfather was a backyard farmer.  I have fond memories of seeing him work in his garden and eating fresh fruits and vegetables.  My favorite was strawberries.  It seems like everytime we visited their house, they always had strawberries on hand.

Last year we planted some strawberry plants in a strawberry pot.  This year, we noticed they’ve started to take over the planter area.  They’re migrating to areas we never intended for them to be.

I’ve decided to transplant these wayward plants into a strawberry patch designed for them to thrive in.  Let’s see if we can recreate what my grandfather did so many years ago.

Till next time, I’m dreaming of strawberry shortcake 🙂
