Social Networking is working

Social Networking

I recently witnessed the positive aspects of a Social Networking working. I am a member of Professional Resource Network. PRN is a network of professionals dedicated to helping each other stay sharp in their job skills and to keep focused on helping others members improve their employment situation. PRN encourages its members to join LinkedIn to increase their professional related contacts. They also encourage other networking activities.

Networking Works

So here’s a description of our network connections and the power of this network.

  • First, Al, Jeff, and Wes are members or alumni of PRN.
  • Second, Jeff and Wes have collaborated on several projects at PRN.
  • Third, Jeff’s network in this diagram is PRN connected to everybody. Wes connected to Jeff and Al connected to Jeff.
  • Fourth, the Professional network, Each person is connected to PRN and to each other. If we hold each other up, we’ll be strong like this pyramid.

I met Jeff through PRN about 7 months ago. Over the past few months our network connection has become very strong.

Jeff met Al through a presentation he gave at PRN. Jeff and Al became networked soon after that meeting.

Up until a few weeks ago, I had never personally met Al, but I knew Jeff and Jeff knew Al. Al was looking for someone with a particular skillset. Jeff knew that I had the skillset Al was looking for. So, Jeff expanded his network and made a connection between Al and me.

If it wasn’t for Social Networking, these collaborating forces (Wes, Jeff and Al) would have never met.

I enjoyed the latest Harry Potter movie

Five Bucks

My wife and I went to the movies today to see “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.”  We went to the Kerasotes Showplace Theatres.  Our tickets were only $5.  Kerasotes has a special deal called the “Five Buck Club”  The only requirement to join is to give them an email address and a mailing address.  Once you provide them with this information, they will send a membership card in the mail and you will get a emails regarding feature films that are coming within a few days of the movie’s release.  You will also get a periodic email notifying you of movies that have gone to the “Five Buck Club”  These are films that no matter when they’re being shown, if you can produce a Five Buck Club membership card and $5 you will receive a ticket of admittance.  So, if you have two people and two membership cards and $10 a couple can go to the movies for not too much money.

Kerasotes Theatre

The theatre has stadium seating with very comfortable high back rocking seats.  It seems to me that every row is placed in such a way that you can view the screen from anywhere in the theatre.  No worries about tall people sitting in front of you.  The elevation between rows is pretty generous.  They use digital video technology for all of their theatres.  Every time I visit the theatres the experience has been great.  Once a movie is no longer the feature film it moves from the primary theatre to one of the smaller ones.  This is when the “Five Buck Club” kicks in.  The members gain access to these movies for only $5.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Don’t worry, there aren’t any spoilers in this article.  I just wanted to say a few words about expectations and disappointment.  When you shell out $10 per person for a movie, not to mention popcorn, etc.  You might have more expectations than if you only spent $5 per person.  Maybe they expect too much from a sequel, I don’t know.  Some people I know said it wasn’t worth the price they paid to watch the movie.  They gave some reasons I’m not going to share because I don’t want to ruin the movie for you.  I will say that maybe part of their disappointment came from spending too much for the movie.

Why I wasn’t disappointed

I usually wait until a movie has gone to DVD and then rent and watch it using Netflix.  However, every once in a while there are films that I think should be seen on the big screen.  Especially if they have lots of action scenes.  I think all the Harry Potter movies should be seen on the big screen.  If I had to pay more than $5, I probably wouldn’t have seen it.  I would have waited for the movie to be released on DVD like I usually do.  But because of the “Five Buck Club” I can afford to watch more films like Harry Potter on the big screen.  So, I was just happy to get out and enjoy the theatre and see the characters develop on the big screen.

BTW:  I plan to purchase this film sometime after it’s released on DVD.

Till next time, see the movie and Judge for yourself.

Mind Mapping Software, creating a ToDo list

MindMap ToDo

NovaMind 4 Express ToDo

Mind Mapping to organize your thoughts is a very useful thing. I have been using Mind Mapping for a short time and I’m already getting the hang of it.  I did the process by hand a few times and now I’m considering purchasing some software that will not get in the way of my thought process.  I’m considering two software packages.  The first application is iMindMap Elements . The price for the Elements version is $99 US dollars.  This software was developed for Tony Buzan, the guy who developed Mind Mapping in the first place.  The second application is called  NovaMind 4 Express.  The price for the Express version is $49 US dollars.  NovaMind has a 30 day trial version that lets you play with it, but saves it with a pronounced watermark across the image.  At least you get a chance to evaluate it before you buy it.

I installed both versions on my computer, to be fair in my initial test, I’m creating the MindMap ToDo image as seen here.  The NovaMind Express wasn’t too bad.  I didn’t time it, but the user interface was pretty intuitive. It didn’t take too long to create it.  I did have to fiddle a little with the branches to get them to look better.

iMindMap ToDo

iMindMap Elements ToDo

I think I’m in love. At first I was thinking there can’t be that much of a difference to justify the extra $50 that iMindMap charges for their elements software.  Well, there is.  The user interface is so easy, I can’t even believe it.  It consistant.  Just mouse over the object you want to branch off until a red dot appears, then click and drag.  The branch labeling, reshaping and recoloring are all very easy as well. The user interface is so easy, I almost cried from the elegant simplicity. It doesn’t get in the way of the thought process.  I didn’t have to think about what I was doing.  Hover, click drag, label, done.  Then repeat again, unless I needed to change the branch or text color.

I originally considered purchasing NovaMind Express software because of its cost and the Mind Map it produced was similar in appearance to iMindMap.  However, after trying out the two applications for my simple needs, I have decided to purchase the iMindMap Elements.  I’m sure it’s the right choice for me.

Note: NovaMind has announced version 5 will be coming in September or October.  At the time of this article only version 4 was available.  I’ll be happy to review version 5 if they would like to get it to me for evaluation.

Till next time, I see a lot of Mind Mapping in my future.

Experience or Paper which is better?

Experience Counted once upon a time

Once upon a time, there was this guy in his early twenties.  He graduated from high school and decided he would go to college and get a degree.  His parents had never gone to college before, so he knew he was already doing better than they had.  Two years later he had earned an Associate degree in his chosen field.  Shortly after that he found an employer that was willing to give young professionals a chance to work and once they had proven themselves they were given more responsibilities.  The pay wasn’t a lot, but it was equal to the education and experience of the employee.  He got married had some kids.  Added some cars and a mortgage.  Basically, he had gotten caught up in life.  The only way he was able to keep up financially was because his work experience and performance were valued by the employer.

Flash forward a couple of decades

The same guy, was so wrapped up in work and trying to maintain a lifestyle that he didn’t realize the job requirements were changing.  Over the years he had taken a few classes to update the skills he needed to keep his job.  He later discovered that no matter how well he performed, the layoffs came anyway.  The recession hit a lot of his colleagues as well.

The importance of paper

After he had gotten over the shock of losing his job, he discovered that the minimum requirements for the job he once held was raised from Associate Degree to Bachelor Degree.  He found out that he no longer qualified for the job he was doing before.  To make matters worse, there were a lot of other workers in the same boat as he was.  They too had gotten a break without the benefit of the formal education and learned in the school of hard knocks.  He found out that there was a whole generation of workers who had joined the workforce after him, that had earned their Bachelor Degrees.

The break

The good thing is that smaller companies are sometimes willing to take a chance on someone who does not have the formal education but has the experience and the talent to back it up.  He had to look longer and harder to find that next opportunity, but he did eventually find one.

The moral of the story

The paper is important.  It represents the formal education and all that comes with it.  Many employers who contract with the government are required to hire employees with a minimum of a Bachelor degree.  Sometimes, even that’s not enough.

Experience is important too.  Along with experience comes wisdom.  The practical application of knowledge.  This comes from doing work in the real world.

The sad truth is that many young adults of today are repeating this story.  They receive their high school diplomas.  Get a taste of money, start to buy things on credit,  fall in love.  Before they know it, life sneaks up on them and they become slaves to their choices.

Sage advice

I’m suggesting that the twenty and thirty somethings choose a better path.  Listen to those who have been down this road before.  They have the experience and wisdom.  If you ask them, they might even share with you some sage advice.

Choose to not be slaves of credit.  Choose to wait on life changing decisions until you have finished ALL of your formal education.  Believe me, it is so much harder to finish these things when you’re trying to support a family, your creditors and keep your lifestyle.

Consider this, today’s Bachelor Degree is yesterday’s High School Diploma.  It used to be that you could get invited for an interview with just a diploma and relevant experience.  This may still be true for service oriented jobs, but if you’re planning on going into a management, technical, scientific, engineering or academic field, you need to have that Bachelor degree as a minimum.

If you agree or disagree with this article, please post a comment.  I want to hear what you have to say.

Make sure you share this article with every twenty or thirty something you know.

Hopefully, it will inspire them to finish their formal education before they make any other life changing decisions.

Mind Mapping

What’s Mind Mapping

We’re going to talk a little bit about Mind Mapping.  Before we begin, let’s see what the definition is.

Main entry: Mind Map

Definition: a diagram used to represent ideas or information branching from a central key word or idea and used as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing

mind map. Dictionary.com. Dictionary.com’s 21st Century Lexicon. Dictionary.com, LLC. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/mind map (accessed: August 12, 2009).

How I learned about it

Up until a month ago, I had never heard about Mind Mapping.  While watching a video on YouTube, I came across a YouTube suggested video that talked about Mind Mapping.  Since, I didn’t know what a Mind Map was, I decided to watch the video.  I was busy at the time, so I filed it away for future reference.

What’s it good for

Mind Maps suggested uses

  • Note Taking
  • Book studying
  • Business Planning
  • Presentation Planning
  • Goal Planning
  • Writing
  • Increased Creativity
  • Project Management
  • Improved Memory
  • Research

It kind of sounds like a cure all for constipation of the mind.  I have decided I will be using it for organizing my thoughts on present and future projects.  From what I’ve seen so far it looks pretty promising.

Till next time, I’ll be reading the software offerings for Mind Mapping
