My thoughts on moving

During the months of March and April I have helped several people move from one house to another or transfer their possessions from a house into storage. During this time, I have been thinking a lot about moving – the tools of the trade and what I liked or disliked about the moves I helped with. One of the moves was planned, the rest were not. The planned move went smoothly.  The other moves each had their good points and bad points.  With each move I learned something new, a new packing or moving technique.  Everybody has an opinion – either good or bad – about the things they’ve experienced.  Here are a few of my thoughts on moving.

Floor plans I like:

  • Double doors
  • Wide doors
  • Wide halls
  • 1 story
  • 2 story with straight stairs

Floor plans I dislike:

  • Narrow doors – sometimes the doors have to be taken off the hinges
  • Narrow halls
  • 2 story with sharp turn on landings

Furniture I like:

  • Sectionals
  • Modular
  • LCD/Plasma TVs

Furniture that slows us down:

  • Heavy furniture
  • Oversized furniture
  • Bulky furniture
  • Rear-projection TVs

Moving tools I frequently use:

  • Moving truck with low bed and long ramp or hydraulic lift
  • Strapping tape
  • Bubble wrap
  • Moving boxes
  • Stretch wrap
  • Corrugated wrap
  • Foam wrap
  • Permanent markers
  • Furniture dollies
  • Hand truck
  • Platform truck
  • Rope / Tie downs
  • Forearm forklift
  • Electric screwdriver with Philips & common bits
  • Rachet & sockets
  • Hammer & assortment of screwdrivers
  • Channel locks for washing machine disconnect & hookup
  • Leather gloves
