The Iphone is an expensive device to maintain and can be a bit intimidating to the non-tech novice. While it is convenient and has many user-friendly (and free) applications, what are some of the pros and cons of owning an Iphone versus having a phone and other electronic devices?

    • mrwes says:

I used to think differently about iPhones. I didn’t see their complete usefulness until I started using one on a regular basis. It wasn’t until then that I completely understood the freedom of mobility. It is true that there are other Smartphones that offer similar functionality. If you already utilize text messaging on a regular basis then you’re half way there. My son, who has used a Blackberry for years for all his mobile needs, recently switched to the iPhone when I did. He tells me every day how much he loves his iPhone.

      Pros:

      1. Your phone is always with you and all your utitlities
      2. Most information only 1 or 2 clicks away
      3. built-in iPod
      4. built-in Camera
      5. browser
      6. Google maps integration with GPS
      7. Social network apps (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
      8. Yelp – food reviews, tied into Google Maps
      9. Flixster – movie reviews, showtimes, locations
      10. If you need more functionality, there’s an App for that

      Cons:

      1. initial investment
      2. requires full internet service package – a necessity when you’re away from WiFi access
      3. FLASH not allowed
      4. only one phone carrier AT&T

In my opinion the pros outweight the cons. I’m never looking back.

Thanks for the pros and cons. It sounds like a worthy investment for anyone that needs to keep on top of all this modern technology. Just one last question…What is Flash?

    • mrwes says:

Flash is an alias for Adobe Flash. Several Video Players, games and web applications are written in Flash.

      wikipedia.org:flash

I have read that Flash is very processor intensive and doesn’t play well with other applications. I also read that resources have not been provided by Adobe to resolve their issues. I read a rumor that the next version might be compatible with iPhone. So, this might be a non-issue in the near future.

Thanks Wes! For an IT professional you do a fantastic job of explaining in non-tech terms. I appreciate the information and I’d be interested to see if the next version will be compatible with the iPhone.
