Things fathers teach us

June 19th, 2010

Father’s Day is this Sunday.  I figured it would be a good time to talk about some fathers in my life.

I have had the good fortune of having several excellent father figures in my life.  Each have left a lasting impression on my character.

A few things my Dad taught me:

  • Be a good provider for your family
  • Always give 100% effort in whatever you do
  • Never give-up, if it doesn’t work one way, maybe there’s another solution
  • How to love others
  • Be disciplined
  • Loyalty no matter what

A few things my Dad’s Dad taught me:

  • Have a hobby you can escape to
  • Important things take time
  • Be patient, good things come to those who wait :-)
  • Enjoy your garden

A few things my Mom’s Dad taught me:

  • Always keep your mind active
  • Never stop learning
  • Vision can become reality
  • If you try you can do it

As a father and scout leader, I frequently consider what advice to shared with my kids and other youth.

A few things I have taught my kids:

  • Love God
  • Love Others
  • Love Yourself
  • Treat everyone with respect
  • Be patient
  • Take responsibility for your actions.  Don’t blame other people for your problems.
  • You need a vision, know your destination before you start.
  • Finish what you start

Maybe you have a father figure in your life who has been an inspiration.  Share with us here.

What value do you add?

In any organization, some members are leaders, or supporters, while others are followers and some seem to always slow down progress. Merry Christmas

December 24th, 2009

I hope everybody has a Merry Christmas. My wife and I had a fabulous dinner Christmas Eve with our kids. We open presents a little early, since all the kids are grown up & spend time with other families as well. We received several BluRay DVDs as gifts; Princess Bride, District 9, Lost Season 5. Our kids also brought over Terminator: Salvation in BluRay. It wasn’t a gift, but it will probably stay here for awhile.

I love watching BluRay videos. We’ve been totally amazed at the detail of the movies in 1080p. It’s just amazing to watch.

The most important thing though was not about the gifts, but the time we spend together as a family.

My wife and I will be calling relatives & watching videos Christmas day.

How will you be spending Christmas?

15 ways to make time for others

October 20th, 2009

I don’t have enough time is something I hear people say all the time.  It’s not really the truth. You need to really sit down and listen to what you’re saying to others. The message you’re sending is I won’t make the time.

Consider how much time it would actually take to sit down and pay a little attention to your loved ones. If you really love them, you need to make the time.

Here are some ways you can make the time: » Read more: 15 ways to make time for others
